Kitesurfing in Mauritius
Kitesurfers of the world are now unanimous about Le Morne Kitesurfing spot being the best one of Mauritius. Some even claim it’s among the best ones in the world. There are however several other wonderful kiteboarding spots around Mauritius. Since all have their peculiarities that are worth knowing, we are publishing below precise information about each of them, hoping that will help riders in choosing the right spots and your accommodation in Mauritius, and especially to ride them safely. The 16 spots that our experts have tested for you are grouped into different regions around Mauritius.
The North Region
Bain-Boeuf
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North West to North East
The Pros: In light summer winds, Bain Boeuf is often the only spot that works around the whole of Mauritius. Nice waves occasionally, off the reefs.
The Cons: Bain-Boeuf is essentially for “ins and outs” The launches may be difficult and may require some dragging in order to avoid the rocks near the shore. The reefs and some parts of the lagoon are very shallow.
Cap Malheureux
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North West to East
The Pros: The spot at Cap Malheureux offers a very smooth sea surface but is again for those of intermediary to confirmed levels due to the difficulty of getting started and the speedboats. Good for kiting under nearly all wind directions but not suitable for Windsurfing due to shallowness.
The Cons: Not really public and accessible to all.
Anse La Raie
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North to East
The Pros: “Works” almost all year round, as from 12 knots announced. The flat shallow surface suits those learning tricks and even beginners as long as they are assisted.
The Cons: The rocks and trees are constant hazards. One must keep awareness alive and remain far off the shore after a quick launch.
Butte a L’herbe
Level: For Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North to East
The Anse La Raie, and Butte a l’herbe spots are all in the same lagoon.
The Pros: The lagoon is a wide flat surface, especially in the shallow areas, and even a nice occasional Waves spot. Nice colourful rides. This lagoon is about the only one in Mauritius that "works" during summer (December to April...) (View Video.)
The Cons: Tricky Launch
Trou-aux-Biches
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North West to South West
The Cons: The spot outside Trou-aux-Biches is very occasional as it requires winds from the North-West or South-West that occur very rarely (often after cyclones.) It is not suitable to beginners as it involves sailing outside the lagoons (downwind to Bain Boeuf) and the lagoon of Mont Choisy is very popular with several speedboats going round.
East / South-East coast
The East coast / South-East coast of Mauritius offers excellent sites for kitesurfers of all levels. For the beginners, the “side / onshore” winds offer safety provided they start away from the shore. To confirmed kiters the coast offers a 22 Km long lagoon for downwind... however ergs and sand banks can represent a hazard at low tides.
Since the prevailing winds are from the South-East or East, there is no land rise to accelerate the wind; kiting conditions are best when the announced prevailing winds are at least of 15 Knots (28 Km/hr.) The lagoons of the East are great for downwind trips that we would recommend making only when accompanied by a speedboat.
The drawbacks
Conditions are best between April and November.
The lagoons count several passes and channels with strong currents pulling outside the reefs; we would therefore recommend Kitesurfing well inside the lagoons, away from the reefs and passes.
Eastern lagoons are irregular in depth and the numerous coral patches are potential threats, especially when using wave boards with long fins. Poste Lafayette
The spots are at each end of Poste Lafayette.
The most Northerly one being the best to launch from with on to side-on winds.
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: East to South West
The Pros: Plenty of space on the beach and in the lagoon
The second spot is in the most downwind and secluded end of the lagoon. It is therefore not the best to launch and is not suitable to beginners as it requires good upwind riding abilities.
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: East to South West
The Cons: Tricky as sheltered; trees and rocks ashore
Belle Mare
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: East to South, South-East
The Pros: Beautiful lagoon, Plenty of Space.
The Cons: To be avoided during weekends / Onshore Winds + Trees...
Palmar
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North East to South, South-East
The Pros: Very Flat surface and no boat traffic as the lagoon "closes" upwind.
The Cons: To be avoided during weekends / On shore Winds + Trees...
Ile aux Cerfs.
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: East to South, South-East
The Pros: Beautiful lagoon; one of the nicest spots to ride, with the super-flat "Joyride" near the reefs, (Requiring a lot of up-wind to reach.)
The Cons: Accessible by boat only
Pointe D'Esny
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: East to South
The Pros: Excellent and beautiful lagoon to ride. Several downwind destinations such as Ilot Flamand and Ile aux Cerfs several kilometres downwind...
The Cons: Onshore Winds + Trees. Can be accessed only by foot via Blue Bay (unless beach accommodation is rented on the spot.) With the increasing amount of riders, and the potential danger they represent, the property owners are getting somehow unfriendly to kitesurfers.
The West Coast
Apart from Le Morne at the Southern tip, the West coast is “kitable” only occasionally when winds are Westward.
Flic en Flac
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North West to South West
Attention: Onshore Winds + Trees / Popular on Weekends
La Preneuse
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: North West to West
Attention: Onshore Winds + Trees
The South Coast
Bel Ombre
Level: For Intermediary to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: South to South East
The Pros: Flat surface
The Cons: Shallowness, Strong Currents
La Prairie
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders although the launching may be tricky
Suitable Wind Directions: South to South East
The Pros: Nice to start for a downwind to Le Morne
The Cons: Tricky launching requiring some drifting / swimming off the beach first / shallow in places,
Le Morne
Level: For Beginners to Expert Riders
Suitable Wind Directions: South to South East
The Pros: Windy during the whole of winter even when other spots are dead. Very complete spot for all levels. On one side a shallow lagoon and rather clear beach for beginners. On another side a wide lagoon with small waves and chops.
Then the great Manawa and One Eye wave riding spots about which a lot has been written... (View Video)
The Cons: Le Morne "works" only in winter (June to November.) / Very crowded in winter with tens of Windsurfers and kitesurfers from worldwide; some not so friendly. / A somehow feeling of anarchy. / Strong Currents near the passes.
