Most guest-houses offer a good to high quality and many are very nicely located, on beautiful stretches of beach or in unique private properties in remote and authentic places like Chamarel. Their success is a proof of professionalism.

The term "Bed & Breakfast" is not widely used in Mauritius probably because it has no equivalence in French. Difficult to draw a line between these and guest houses, except that the latter tend (but not always) to propose half-board accommodation. Not all guest house owners live in the buildings but their managers tend to live on or near the spot.

Mauritius Guest houses and Bed & Breakfast are somehow the most recently developed type of accommodation in Mauritius and seem to have a bright future as the universal favour for smaller structures gains ground; the better availability of airline seats by individual travellers also helps.

They can be booked directly (using Tropicscope as a directory) or via locally-based agencies as they are normally disregarded by the big ones owing to their limited capacities of generating cash. Rates would normally be uniform irrespective of the channel used.
